Third Announcement
2016 Nov. 10
***SCIENCE-RELATED NOTES***
The scientific program is already online at: http://www.kochil-2016.com/program.html. Shortly, we will also upload onto the same webpage the .pdf version of the abstract book.
As you can see, the invited talks would be of 40 min (30 min + 10 min for questions), while the contributed talks would be of 20 min (15+5). We would also like to give the opportunity to those of you who present posters to talk about their works in a 5 min presentation. Therefore, don't miss the two poster sessions on Monday, Dec. 5.
For Tuesday afternoon we are setting a round table on accretion processes in interacting binaries. If you have any specific topic you would like to bring to anyone's attention, please just let us know - suggestions are fully welcome!
Wednesday morning will be entirely dedicated to instrumentation, with a specific focus on high-resolution spectrographs.
Finally, we would like to remind participants who have not sent their abstracts yet, to do so at their earliest convenience.
***TRANSPORTATION***
In the afternoon of Wednesday we will drive to Cerro Pachón to visit the Gemini Observatory and the SOAR Telescope. From the Gemini terrace you will also be able to spot the silhouette of the (rapidly growing) LSST building! See the attached pictures, taken just a few days ago on the way to the summit for a GeMS/GSAOI laser run.
For safety reasons, to enter the AURA premises and visit the Observatories you are requested to read and sign a release form. It would be really appreciated if you could give it to us already during the registration process or, even better, return it by email to Jeong-Eun, completed and with your signature.
From Monday to Wednesday morning there will be a minivan leaving from Hotel Costa Real to the workshop venue (one way only - offered on a first-come first-served basis, 7 seats).
Since there are a few people who will attend the social dinner at El Molle, but are not interested in the visit to the Observatories - and, similarly, a few who will join the visit to the summit, but can not make it for the social dinner - we have arranged an independent transportation leaving from La Serena to El Molle and straight back to La Serena. Details about departure times and locations will come in a later communication.
Please also be reminded that while the social dinner comes with no cost for the registered participants, any accompanying person is requested to pay his/her contribution (25000 CLP/~40 USD) at the registration desk. We can accept only cash, no credit cards nor checks.
In the next few weeks we will give you more details about other logistic aspects, but please do not hesitate to contact us for any questions/comments you may have in the meanwhile.
We are all looking forward to seeing you in La Serena!

Second Announcement
2016 Sept. 13
We are pleased to announce that the list of participants is now online, and it will be regularly updated until Sept. 30, final deadline for registration.
We are also pleased to inform that the deadline for requesting financial support has been extended to Sept 30.
The new venue of the workshop is the "Salón Pentágono" in the Andrés Bello Campus of the Universidad de La Serena.
Our LOC has reserved 15 superior rooms at the Hotel Costa Real at a special price. The deadline for taking advantage of this special fare remains Oct. 31. More details in the accommodation page. Please do not forget that December is the beginning of the touristic season in Chile, and La Serena is a popular destination: we thus recommend to arrange any booking well in advance.
We will soon upload the abstract of both oral and poster contributions, so stay tuned!

First Announcement
We are pleased to announce a joint Chile-Korea-Gemini workshop on accretion processes
in symbiotic stars and related objects, to be held on December 4-7, 2016 in La Serena - Chile.
In the most recent years the Chilean and the Korean astronomical communities have started a journey that should bring them closer and closer despite their maximal physical distances on Earth. Several initiatives at various official levels are fostering the most diverse collaborations on all aspects of forefront astrophysical investigation between research groups usually sitting on the opposite side of the Pacific Ocean. The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI), in particular, has promoted since 2015 a specific grant aimed at boosting such bilateral collaborations by funding common research projects, student exchange visits, and encouraging the organization of bilateral astrophysical workshops. The first Chile-Korea research project has been awarded to our team - whose members are from the Gemini Observatory, the Sejong University, the Chilean Millennium Institute of Astrophysics and the Las Campanas Observatory - to study accretion processes in symbiotic stars and young planetary nebulae.
In the framework of such a vibrant collaboration we are organizing a three-days workshop to be held in La Serena, Chile, on Dec. 4-7, 2016. The workshop is organized by Gemini Observatory, Sejong University and University of La Serena, under the patronage of KASI. It aims at discussing various research activities on symbiotic stars and related objects, including theoretical and observational studies, with a particular emphasis on the characterization of accretion processes via high-resolution spectroscopy and fast photometry.
We will have quite a number of review talks given by a carefully selected team of invited speakers, as well as plenty of room for oral and poster contributions on any subject related to the workshop main topic. The participation of students is particularly encouraged. We are also preparing several social events: a welcome reception on Sunday 4th, a unique tour of Cerro Pachón, site of Gemini South telescope and of the upcoming LSST, as well as a typically Chilean social dinner in the spectacular setting of the Elqui Valley, on Wednesday 7th.
The deadline for registration is September 30, 2016
We can offer financial support to cover the stay in La Serena: the deadline for requesting financial support is August, 31.
We have also prepared a list of suggested accommodations that the participants may take into account at the moment of booking their stay in La Serena. Please note that December is the beginning of the touristic season in Chile, and La Serena is a popular tourist destination in the (Chilean) summer. We thus recommend to arrange any booking well in advance.
Please check the meeting web page regularly for program updates and the latest news (http://kochil-2016.com/).
We sincerely hope this workshop will contribute toward strengthening even more such collaborative relation between the Chilean and the Korean astronomical communities. Looking forward to seeing you in La Serena!
